Awards Encourage Artistic Innovation

The Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) is pleased to announce the names of the 2012 recipients of the New Works Artist Project Grant awards.

The 15 Grant awards distributed this year are meant to help practicing artists produce new and innovative bodies of work. Selection is based on grantees’ ability to demonstrate the highest standard of artistic excellence and to represent a diverse spectrum of artists and artistic disciplines. Grant awards range from $2,950 to $3,500.

Among the many exemplar projects are:

  • a series of mixed media collages by Bill Mackey that address consumer culture;
  • a photo exhibit and publication by Noah Saterstrom that documents Southwestern hand-painted food signs;
  • a mixed-genre novel by Shloka Magharam that looks at society’s tendency to blame females who are victims of violence;
  • a dance piece by Barbea Williams that uses story, dance, games – and string to showcase cultural traditions;
  • a documentary by Leslie Ann Epperson on Tucson’s All Souls Procession.

The New Works Artists Project Grant program is supported in part by a partnership between TPAC and the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona.

“The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona is thrilled to partner with TPAC in support of the New Works Artist Project Grants,” states Evan Mendelson, Vice-President of Program Services and Community Initiatives.

As Mendelson explains, “This partnership represents our commitment to the richness and diversity of the individual artists whose creations feed our souls and make our community a wonderful place to live and work.”
