Tucson Pima Arts Council Awards $272,000 in Grants To Support Arts & Culture Throughout Metro Area

TUCSON, Ariz. (August 18, 2009) – The Tucson Pima Arts Council announces more than $272,000 in grants awarded to 53 arts organizations throughout the greater Tucson community. TPAC is the designated local arts agency for the City of Tucson and Pima County.
The grant recipients – from Arizona Balalaika Orchestra to the Zuzi! Dance Company – span the creative spectrum with projects ranging from glass art and film to drumming, poetry and child’s play, ballet, mariachi, jazz and inter-active theater. (See list below.)
These grants support new and ongoing creative arts projects, including arts in education, dance, festivals, literature, music, theatre and the visual arts. Other grants provide general operating support.
“Every year the grants process reminds us of the breadth and depth of the arts and culture in our community,” said Reuben Tomas Roqueñi, grants program manager for TPAC. “These grant recipients are among the many ‘Sources of Originality’ in our community who enrich our culture and our lives.”
The 2009-2010 grants support developing arts organizations and opportunities to create new arts experiences with guest choreographers, living stories, new technologies and multi-disciplinary cross pollinations. Grants also help sustain established ethnic traditions like the mariachi conference, our festival culture including the All Souls Procession, and large institutions like the theatre, symphony, ballet and art museum. Grant applications are reviewed and scored by panels of artists, arts administrators, business leaders and other experts in the field.
“Our goal is to use this government funding to support a broad diversity of arts projects and strengthen the cultural fabric of this community,” Roqueñi said.
